decals on both sides, what they are and how are they made?
The decal term is the abbreviated version of the word decal. A decal is a decorative technique where images artist prints and engravings, could be transferred to the ceramic decorating stoneware.
The invention of making artists rendering of the painting and printing these images on a substrate to be decorated ceramic pieces was awarded to Simon Francis Ravenet. Simon came from France and was a writer who immigrated to England and after arriving in England about 1750 he develops this transfer process.
This method of printing the decoration of ceramics was imported into the United States to 1865. United States, this procedure has been popularized during the craze for decorative Ceramic mid-1870. United States, the decal word was shortened to the version we use today decal.
The stickers are printed today on a plastic substrate manufactured with an adhesive to adhere to surfaces. The plastic substrates are legion and a few household words, we know that vinyl (PVC AKA), Mylar ® or polyester clear is the generic name Mylar ®.
There are 3 (three) types of decals, the first is known as face up decal (industry jargon for printing) also known as sided sticker with adhesive backing for mounting outside window. The second is known as a decal face down (industry jargon for printing) also known as a single-sided adhesive sticker with a face window for inside mounting. The third type is the double sided sticker.
The first 2 (two) types are printed decal, a type of lasting impression in extreme environments and resist fading by the sun. The first is the white vinyl face up or decal can be used in a well-adhered to windows, doors, cabinets, notebooks, bumper cars. The second is the transparent polyester is used for manufacturing a sticker with the adhesive on the face, so when the sticker is applied within the window of the image or graphic is visible from the outside of the window.
The third is the decal on both sides is really a combination of two (2) described above, using the vinyl white and clear polyester printed today.
Until the mid-1980s, when double-sided printed decals using only a product of clear polyester. Thumbnails double-faced this time were mainly an accumulation of ink on one side of the polyester transparent. The double sided sticker has two pictures that we see through the adhesive material and the second image is the impression image first. If the sticker should be printed in red and blue on a white background and the message was "Hot Dogs sold here" This message was printing like a mirror "ereH DLOS sgoD toh" on transparent polyester as seen through the adhesive of the image. The second face printed right on the same message reading "Hot Dogs sold here" was printed above the message already printed, but with an opaque ink printed on the silver mirror image so that the decal is not transparent. Because the inks are not completely opaque money metallic ink was printed between the two images so when the decal is placed on a window you will not be able to see through the decal.
In 1979-1980 lead was eliminated as a component screen printing inks, by order of the federal government, screen printing inks have been reformulated unleaded. When the screen-printing inks used without the new component for the manufacture of lead decals on both sides, the inks are more resilient to crack because the inks of many layers of ink printed on top of another.
Thus, a new technology was invented and this new product was not an ink but a material known as a barrier film. The barrier film is a plastic sheet with glue that is completely opaque so you can not see through this film.
The screen-printer uses this film vinyl white fence and white prints on vinyl like when they make white vinyl decals. Then the printer prints on polyester clearly the 2nd picture as a mirror, then the printer to clear laminated polyester adhesive side of the barrier film, now you have two faces read.
decals on both sides presents a much cleaner on a window, because if a vinyl sticker or disable decal polyester is used and adhered to the front window of a shop or a house for each of these have a large white turned inwards store or at home. The sticker has double-sided image of the two sides, creating a nice piece of advertising.
