Arguably no career design is sexier than the automotive designer. today's designers embody the styles and today's culture while contour style tomorrow. They use the principles of product design and emerging technologies to create commercial but innovative designs for new cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, vans and trucks. Often working in tandom with a large team of engineers, designers work to ensure that their concepts involve consumers, may actually lead to motor function, and are environmentally friendly and affordable. Not to mention ….. sexy.
History
In the U.S., automotive design has reached a critical stage in 1924 when the automobile market American National has begun to reach saturation. To maintain sales, General Motors pioneer Alfred P. Sloan Jr. suggested annual design changes model year in the hope that car owners would buy a new replacement each year. His strategy was successful and was subsequently adapted by the rest of the industry.
The most famous car designer Harley Earl is probably American, who introduced the caudal fin and Other references to aircraft design at the design of automobiles in the 1950s. Earl is joined in automotive designers legendary Gordon Buehrig, responsible for the Auburn Cord iconic 851 and 810 and 812. Another designer who had a remarkably different style was Chrysler Group designer Virgil Exner, a pioneer before the booth (see akaForward) design in mid-1950. Exner is also credited for introducing of the tail in the 1956 Plymouth Belvedere later adapted by all the other studios in Detroit.
Work
The tasks of a design team cars are usually divided into three main aspects: exterior design, interior design, and color and design of the garnish. The design is also an important aspect of car design, which is usually shared between the design team that the designer Chief's discretion. Design focuses not only on the isolated outer shape of automobile parts, but concentrates on the combination of form and function, from the whole vehicle. Here is a breakdown of design elements:
- Exterior Design: The designer responsible for the design of the exterior of the vehicle is one that develops the proportions, shape and surfaces of the vehicle. exterior design is First in a series of digital or manual drawings and clay (industrial plasticine) models are developed from these drawings. 3 and 5 CNC milling machines are used in creating the clay model of the final design.Even modern times with 3D and virtual models on shelves high visibility, the clay model is still the most important tool in assessing the design of a car and therefore used in industry. The data from these models are then used to create models in addition to the final design.
- Interior Design: The designer responsible for designing the vehicle interior develops the proportions, shape, placement, and surfaces for the dashboard, seats, panels door trim, headliner, pillar trim, etc. with the interior, the emphasis is on ergonomics and ultimate comfort for passengers. The design process with the interior design of the car is the same as for the exterior design (sketch, digital model and clay model). The aesthetics of the interior will match the functionality and ergonomic utility. In particular, electronic components vehicles and parts will give more challenges to automotive designers who are required to update the calculations based on the latest information and knowledge associated with vehicles emerging gadgets, especially dashtop mobile devices such as GPS navigation, satellite radio, HD radio, mobile TV, MP3 players, video playback and smartphone interfaces.
- Colour and Trim Design: The color and finish (or color and materials) developer is responsible for research, design and development of all interior and exterior color and materials used on a vehicle. These include paintings, drawings and plastic models in fabric, leather, cereals, carpets, headliner, wood trim, and so on. Designers working in close collaboration with external designers and interior inspiration from other design disciplines such as: industrial design, fashion, furniture, architecture and product design sometimes.
- Design: The design team also develop graphics for elements such as badges, stickers, dials, switches, kick or tread, delivered.

Includes steps following:
Education
Automotive design is practiced by designers who have a history of art and design degrees industrial and transportation design. Careers related to the automatic design include product design, automotive engineering, and electrical engineering. successful designers must be creative and have strong math, drawing, and science. They must also have strong communication skills draftingand computer.
Since Automotive Design is a highly competitive field, a high level of academic success is good for finding a entry-level work. Courses such as industrial design, electrical engineering, mathematics, environmental sciences and design assisted by computer are often necessary for designers looking to break into the industry. A program of automobile engineering diploma can provide training simulation and hands on experience in the field. A program of internship or work study is often a necessary component the number of schools of Automotive Engineers, which can provide immediate placement after graduation.
The following schools of higher education are recommended:
Academy of Art University San Francisco, CA
Art Center College of Design Pasadena, CA
Art Institutes
College of Creative Studies Detroit, MI
Humber College Toronto, Canada
Lawrence Technological University Southfield, MI
York Pratt Institute York, NY
Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta, GA
University of Cincinnati – College of Design in Cincinnati, OH
Perspective
Despite the stagnant growth of the automotive manufacturing industry, a career in automotive design is still expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014. There is still a strong demand for qualified engineers who specialize in the technologies and processes assisted computer and build a better fuel economy, enhanced efficiency of valuable opportunities for a career in automotive engineering success.
The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that starting bid $ 48,585 on average for those with bachelor's degrees in engineering mechanics. However, wages for automotive designers varies greatly depending on experience, employer and location.
