Editing the guitar, and what level do I add a vinyl sticker, and how do I seal?
I touch up an old guitar. I sanded to raw wood and I plan on painting, but I want to add a vinyl sticker to make it look cooler. At what stage of painting process should I apply the decal, and how can I seal up the guitar permanently? I read that these vinyl stickers do not work well with hairspray nitrocellulose, it is also clear-coats available that do not have this in them?
According to application instructions, no provision has been suggested for clear coating on the guitar once the new decal is mounted on the guitar. It seems that the sticker is printed on vinyl signs. Products such as hairspray, so fresh, can perhaps wrinkle or lift the decal. The suggestion Appling sticker to Frest "sticky" layer of clear finish is not a good suggestion, because of the fact that, as drying is complete, it "shrinks" This will cause the decal again, wrinkle or lift. If the sticker paper is "printed" decal, applying a layer transparent on the sticker, you will protect the decal. The finish I usually use on instruments, lacquer is because I can repair the damage occurring to the instrument. Other finishes, does not repair well. I saw guitars finish in the new finishes "plastic" used as a transparent coating on cars, they are very durable, but also very expensive for materials. My suggestion is to contact a luthier and get his opinion. A word of caution is that the factory finish, are formulated to provide better protection and appearance of the instrument. Aftermarket finishes may not always give you the sound quality you expect.
